THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ILARO JOURNAL OF PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCES VOLUME 6 ISSUE 1
Vol. 6 No. 1 (2024)In recent times, it has become imperative to engage more in collaborative research in the area of pure and applied science to provide long-term solutions to numerous problems in the 21st century. Hence, I am excited to introduce to you the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro—Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences (FEPI-JOPAS) as a platform for the dissemination and unveiling of thought-provoking information and research findings in applied science. I welcome our readers, scientific audience, and researchers’ community to volume 6, issue 1, of this peer-reviewed and accredited multi-disciplinary journal of international repute that is indexed in the Database of African Journal Online (AJOL). FEPI-JOPAS publishes short communication, full-length research work, critical reviews, and other review articles. It archives research information to 21st-century researchers, professionals, policymakers, manufacturers, production staff, research and development personnel, and governmental and non-governmental agencies.
In this edition, the effect of co-fermentation of millet grains with spices (garlic or ginger) on flour properties and porridge quality was investigated by Adebowale and Ajibode. Assessment of the free radical scavenging activity of various solvent fractions of Justicia. carnea, and evaluation and quantification of the phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) content in various solvent fractions of the methanolic extract of J. carnea were unveiled by Omotayo and Adeboye. The anticorrosion activity of Launaea taraxacifolia leaves on mild steel in an acid medium was the central focus of the research work of Jesusina and Ajayi. In another study, Olufayo and coworkers examined the impact of Phyllanthus niruri leaf meal (PNLM) on the caecum microbial population and layers chicken's blood profiles during the growth stage. The quality assessment of flour and amala produced from white yam (Dioscorea rotundata), unripe plantain (Musa paradisiaca) and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) was carried out by Babalola and co-workers.
In addition, Alaba and Gabriel examined the anthropometric status and cognitive performance of school-age children in Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. This was followed by the design, construction and performance evaluation of a walk-behind driven mono wheel agro-chemical boom sprayer which was the main aim of the research effort of Enamaku and Ogunlade. A review by Ibidapo-Obe and Yusuff highlighted the current state of aquaculture in Nigeria, the challenges faced, and the potential benefits of diversifying fish species. The work of Okosode and Sokale dealt with food preferences and foraging ecology of the black and white mannikin bird (Spermestes bicolor) found in Ilaro, Ogun State, Nigeria. The next study by Gabriel and Alaba assessed the nutritional status and functional capacity of the Elderly in selected communities in Yewa South, Ogun state. The research work of Sangosina and Akinlade described the effect of sex and environmental parameters on the performance and physiology of rabbits. Buoye and Akinbola presented a comprehensive exploration of leveraging blockchain technology to enhance database backup and recovery processes, thereby safeguarding data integrity. Adeyeye and Okedairo explored the acoustic characteristics of non-traditional Agidigbo musical instruments. Another study by Oduwole surveyed the direct effect of moderating variables on behavioural intention to surveying practice. Amao et al. evaluated the effect of clove powder (Syzygium aromaticum) on semen characteristics, haematological and serum-biochemical indices of cocks. The research effort of Adedokun and co-workers aimed to reduce malnutrition in the tropics, and a mixture of sorghum and pigeon peas at ratios: of 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, and 60:40%) were co-fermented to produce dried ‘Ogi’ flour.

The Federal Polytechnic Ilaro Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences (FEPI-JOPAS) is a double blinded peer-reviewed and bi-annual open access journal(June and December). It aims to provide scholarly platform for critical and informed articles in Sciences, Applied Sciences, Computing Technology, Environmental Sciences and Engineering related fields. Prospective research scholars are invited to submit their original quality manuscript, research reports, intellectual articles and latest research & findings. Submission for the first issue of every year ends on 31st of April while manuscripts for the second issue are accepted until 31st of October. ISSN: 2714-2531.

INSTRUCTION TO AUTHORS:
- Each manuscript should conform with the APA style of referencing (6th Edition) typed in single line spacing and maximum of five thousand (5000) words.
- The manuscript should bear the title of the article, name(s) of author(s), office designation(s), affiliation place(s) of work, telephone number(s) and e-mail address(es). Abstracts of 100 to 200 words are required to introduce each article, Keywords of not more than six(6) should be included. - Authors are strongly advised to check the similarity index of their paper using Turnitin, the accepted similarity index is 20%. Also the use of grammar checker is strongly advised before submission.

With great pleasure and anticipation, I welcome our readers to Volume 7, Issue 1 of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro - Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences (FEPI-JOPAS). This edition continues our tradition of publishing high-quality, interdisciplinary research that addresses critical issues across science, technology, health, and socio-economic development. The eight articles featured in this issue exemplify the journal’s commitment to relevance, innovation, and academic rigour. They reflect a blend of empirical research, technological advancement, and strategic analysis to solve real-world problems, particularly within the Nigerian context and globally.
Alawore and Laure present a timely and impactful study titled "Leveraging Digital Marketplaces to Enhance the Contribution of Local Artisans and Craftsmen to Nigeria's Economic Diversification", offering a valuable framework for integrating traditional skills into the modern economy. Similarly, Ojenike and Badru tackle a pressing issue in their article "Addressing Gender Inequalities in TVET: Promoting Participation and Empowerment for Women", advocating for inclusive technical and vocational education as a catalyst for empowerment and national development.
From the domain of soil science and environmental modelling, Olaleye et al. contributes to "Mathematical Modelling of the Moisture Retaining Characteristic of Clay Soil Over Some Other Soil Types", providing insights vital for agriculture and land management. Ojo and Ayodele’s article, "Evaluating the Predictive Power of Random Forest Regression on Economic Growth", demonstrates the application of advanced machine learning tools to economic forecasting, with strong implications for policy and planning.
In the field of computer science and education, Soyemi and Kolawole present "Mobile-based Real-time Lecture Reminder System", an innovative approach to improving academic engagement and time management among students. Meanwhile, Olubena et al. provide critical insights into health informatics through their article "Healthcare Professionals' Perceptions of Artificial Intelligence Integration: A Case Study of Lagos State, Nigeria", which explores the readiness and implications of AI in medical practice.
Equally forward-looking is the article by Ogunseye and Sodeinde, "A Comparative Analysis of CNN and Tesseract OCR on Handwritten Recognition System", which evaluates the efficacy of machine learning models in handwriting recognition—a key area in document digitization and AI applications. Finally, Adeboye et al. deliver a crucial biomedical study titled "Histological Assessment of the Ethanolic Extract of Ficus platyphylla on N-Nitroso-N-Methylurea Induced Toxicity in Female Albino Mice (Mus musculus)", contributing to the growing body of knowledge on plant-based therapeutic interventions.
Together, these contributions reinforce the journal’s role as a platform for multidisciplinary research that bridges theory and practice. It is with immense pleasure and pride that I present to you Volume 6, Issue 2 of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro - Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences (FEPI-JOPAS). As we continue to embark on a journey of academic excellence, innovation, and knowledge dissemination, this edition brings to the fore a selection of thought-provoking, interdisciplinary research that showcases the ingenuity and expertise of our scholarly community. This volume features five exceptional manuscripts, each contributing to the advancement of scientific understanding in diverse fields, ranging from applied technology and energy systems to plant-based biochemistry and predictive algorithms. These papers are the result of rigorous research and critical analysis, reflecting the depth of scholarship fostered at the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro and beyond.
The first manuscript, authored by Alabi and Ojo titled A Comparative Analysis of Extreme Gradient Boosting and Support Vector Regression for Modeling Benchmark Crude Oil Prices, offers valuable insights into the application of machine learning algorithms in predicting one of the most volatile and essential global commodities—crude oil. By comparing the performance of two sophisticated modeling techniques, this study paves the way for more accurate forecasting in the energy sector. In the second paper, Kumoye and Remi-Esan considered Comparative Analysis of Phytochemical Constituents, Proximate Composition, and Energy Value of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. Leaf and Petal Extracts. The authors dive into the rich nutritional and medicinal potential of Hibiscus sabdariffa. This paper not only adds to the growing body of knowledge on natural products but also has significant implications for the health and wellness industry, as well as sustainable agricultural practices.
In the third paper by Ayodele and Sodeinde, the work titled Student Academic Performance Prediction System Using Ensemble Algorithm explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in education. The authors have developed a system that predicts student performance based on multiple factors, providing a tool for improving academic outcomes and informing educational strategies. Paper four by Sanni and Onigbara, The Next On, Development of a Crucible Furnace Fired with Liquefied Petroleum Gas—Butane Gas, introduces an innovative approach to energy efficiency in industrial processes. This research presents a design for a crucible furnace that utilizes liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as an alternative fuel, demonstrating how this can contribute to a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for melting operations in the manufacturing sector. Finally, the article by Sanni and Onigbara titled Design and Construction of Thermoelectric Generator Using Parabolic Trough Collector addresses the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions. This paper outlines the design and construction of a thermoelectric generator powered by solar energy, contributing to the exploration of renewable energy technologies and their integration into real-world applications.
Each manuscript in this issue is a testament to the vibrant academic environment and wide readership scientific platform created by FEPI-JOPAS for prolific authors of international repute. I commend the authors for their dedication to advancing knowledge in their respective fields.
